Tell us your first meeting.
Léa Drucker : I knew Vanessa, of course, before she knows me.

L.D :Yes, and I followed your career as a singer. We have the same age... One day, a frriend told me : "Vanessa loves you very much.". When you know that your work is appreciated, it's very encouraging.
V.P :You are one of our best actresses, someone whom we want to spend some time. At the beginning, in the film, I just met you at a party. I missed it terribly. I asked to Cécilia to write us a "sequence of women", beautiful and long. It was very symbolic. It was your last shooting day, and it was my first shooting day.
L.D :I have handed over This scene also tells : I interpret this "excessive woman" who could not have children. She entrusts her brother to you, and she's his raising his two daughters. I waited impatiently for this day. Suddenly, I felt intimidated. It was a good thing for my acting, 'cause my character is so "solar", extreme and nervous.

What is the first thing you would say to each other ?
L.D :Vanessa has a great spontaneity. You're real, you're in the moment. You let yourself be carried away by what happens. I was amazed by your sensitivity. I practice a lot the theater, and I always try to find the sensivity you've got naturally.
V.P :It was because of the stage. I'm not always like that. So, it was my first shooting day, and I was nervous. Emmanuelle, my character, is so positive, she is not embarrassed by her emotions. I would like to be like her, but that's not possible. It's a difficult role, but I had to do it. I had this ease for the role. You said that you were nervous, but I was too. Maybe it was to protect myself, 'cause I felt very unsound, it's a "sister reflex". A way to tell to myself : "Don't worry". So I felt it like that.
L.D :That's right.
V.P :I've always admired your intensity, you're real Léa. You're strong, you've got soundness and originality. I felt we were connected, even if we didn't know a lot of thing about each other.
L.D :A kind of intimacy can be created we act each other, even if we do not say personnal things. This is a bond we can continue. We don't forget these feelings.

"Je me suis fait tout petit" is a film directed by Cécilia Rouaud. When the female characters are written by women, are they more concrete ? With less fantasy ?

V.P: I think the difference is in the behaviour. With a male director, maybe there is a ratio of seduction. We need to be looked. In front of a female director, there isn't this reflex anymore. "A barrier falls"...
On a set, the attitude also comes from the personality of the director. With Cécilia we felt good.
L.D : She loves actresses. She knows how to direct them.
V.P : Cécilia is very precise. How touching it was to see the joy on her face, she was so happy to make her film. It always is moving a first film.
L.D :I shooted in a lot of first films, generally, I feel inspired by these scripts. Each time, I think I make progress. ??
It sometimes is distressing, but we progress like that, that's a good way to progress.
V.P :I'm happy when you say that. It always is the first time to me. I let time spends between shootings, and I make music.
L.D :Do you feel that with music too ?
V.P :Oh yes ! Every time a made a record. It's the same thing for a concert; It always is the last concert which is important. It's like a boxing match.

Do you continue this job for that ? Is it one of the reasons ?

L.D :Necessarily. Feeling settled, bored, it's sad.
V.P :It would be the beginning of the end, especially for an artistwho have to keep his child's soul for acting.

What is your first memory/image from cinema ?
L.D :Le magicien d'Oz, I saw it when I was five years old, the original version.
V.P :Wow ! You began with a strong film !
L.D :My father was a film buff and we lived in Washington. I told to myself the story all day long. Judy Garland was a friend to me. And Ozland was a real place. My parents let me believe in that... ??
My grand-mother, who was Welsh sang me the songs of the film with her piano.
V.P :If I don't include cartoons, it's Chantons sous la pluie...It's a good film too. I thought it was the best film in Technicolor. I often watch this movie and I feel the same emotions, the same shivers.
L.D :I sometimes think about what the story of Le magicien d'Oz tells, I mean about disillusion, when someone is like a myth. I really like Chantons sous la pluie too; I feel very nostalgic for this period. I went with my father to Cinémas Action in order to watch movies. Later, when I was usherette at the Mac Mahon, I heard in the distance this unique soundtrack which goes on the blink a little.
V.P :When I was little, I didn't think I could become an actress or a singer. I benefited from my dreams and my feelings. I sang, I danced and I disguised.

What are the first advice you've received ?

L.D : I was said that it was inadvisable to become an actress. I was seventeen years old, and I didn't listen to this advice. You have to be thoughless to become an actress.
V.P : I made movies 'cause I was very successful in music. And I wanted to make movies. I stopped my studies in order to shoot my first film, Noce Blanche. I was seventeen years old, I went to high school. I was very successful but we didn't know if it would last. My mother was agreed that I stopped going to school, but my father was not, and finally he was agreed too.
My first advice, is Daniel Auteuil, on the set of The Girl on the bridge. He told me little things that I often thinf of ; "Don't give all at the first filming, allow yourself the time, and everything will come together."

The last time you made yourself very small ?

L.D :Ah ah ! That's complicated, this is not necessarily a good time. Recently, at theater, during rehearsals of Lucide. Karin Viard was in front of me and said : "You, if you continue to hide yourself behind !" We laughted a lot and it helped me.
V.P :During the shooting of Élisa. I was 19-20 years old. Physically, I was so little with Gérard Depardieu by my side. And I wanted to observe, to keep quiet.

The first comedy that you remember ?

L.D :Judy Garland, and Natalie Wood in La fièvre dans le sang (Fever in blood), a melodrama about a woman devastated by a broken heart. She really impressed me.
V.P :Romy Schneider in César et Rosalie, for the intensity of her face, that so feminine body, the intensity of the emotions, her acting, her accent, her voice.
L.D :We have the impression these actresses are not acting, they are.

The first time you thought : "That's it, I'm a real actress." ?

V.P :I think I didn't say it to myself yet. Yes, yes, but when someone ask me what is my job, I answer : "singer and actress".
L.D :We need some time to accept it. Maybe it happens when you act for the first time with an actor that you admire : "I am in front of him or her..." In front of Jean-Pierre Bacri, for example, even if I only had three sentences to say.
V.P : In the others' eyes, I stay a singer who makes movies. And with the time I spend between films... Even if, you know what ? Last year, after making four films, I may had this impression of legitimity. I think it began with Café de Flore. Finally, I was chosen by Jean-Marc Vallée ( the director), even though, at the beginning, he didn't want of me. I don't know how I managed to convince him...
I am this mediatic image which frightens (??) I understand that.
And finally, what's important, is to be stronger than this image...
