I have a question. Is this campaign only going to be in Europe? Or is it going to be in the US too? Because I live in the US and theres an H&M store in the mall. It would awesome to see Vanessas pictures in front of the store.

Singer, actress, model, mother and veritable style icon, meet the star of H&M’s Conscious Collection.
Think of Vanessa Paradis and your mind will most likely conjure up images of those lips and cheekbones, that gap in her teeth, or perhaps you’ll simply start whistling Joe le taxi. The French singer, actress, model and mother of two, who turned 40 last December, first captured the world’s attention at the age of 14, when she stood in front of a yellow cab singing about Joe, and then again in 1991, when she became the face of Chanel’s Coco perfume with one of the most iconic ads of all time, directed by artist Jean-Paul Goude (remember the cage?). As if that wasn’t enough, Vanessa also has an equally impressive film career, winning a César (France’s Oscar) and, most recently, filming in New York opposite Woody Allen. Plus, she’s the ultimate cool French girl who wears vintage Chanel like a second skin. That whole je ne sais quoi thing? She’s got it.

We caught up with Vanessa one morning in LA to find out more about being the face of H&M’s Conscious Collection, dressing up and her love of musicals.

You’re known for your love of vintage, and effortless bohemian look. But how would you describe your style?
I can’t! I like all kinds of different styles and it just depends on what I do, you know? But whether I dress fancy or casual, I always like to be comfortable because there’s nothing worse than being uncomfortable. Mind you, I don’t mind being a little bit uncomfortable now and then! Killer, super-high heels – they are beautiful, but not made to walk around in for twelve hours. But I’ll wear them for the fun of it!

What attracted you to H&M’s Conscious Collection?
I really like what H&M has been doing lately, by inviting a bunch of different designers and artists to work with them, so when they approached me I was really flattered. Also, it’s a very popular brand and very accessible to everybody around the world so I liked the idea of being part of something like the Conscious Collection.

Do you try to shop more consciously?
I try my best in little ways. For example, vintage is very much a part of my wardrobe. I love the style and it works in that eco-friendly way because I like to use and reuse old clothes – whether I use them just as they are or I have them transformed, or transform them myself. I also try to shop reasonably, I mean, if there is such a word in shopping! I’m very fortunate to have a lot of clothes offered to me, but when I shop I try to buy something that I really need or really love.

You have accomplished so much in your career, is there anything left that you’d still like to do?
I’d love to do a musical! It’s complicated finding a good one. I dream so much about the old musicals from the 40s and 50s, by MGM and Bob Fosse’s from the 60s and 70s!

If you could remake an old favourite, which one would it be?
Singin’ in the Rain is the one that I’ve loved since I was a kid. I don’t know which girl I would like to play, though. Obviously Debbie Reynolds’ role is beautiful, but the one that Cyd Charisse plays… She has no lines in the movie – all she does is dance – but her dancing numbers are so incredible.
