Born from the impulse of two incredible women, the Ama Project aims to help the women of Minami Sanriku in the tsunami-stricken Northeast Japan. When Ritsuko Nishimae and Kasumiko Murakami arrive on location, right after the apocalyptic earthquake, they are shocked by the scale of the disaster that hit the Miyagi Prefecture almost one year ago. The two women were also outraged by the quiescence of the government facing the nuclear threat and how the money raised by various charities and organizations was so slow to reach even the most devastated of regions on the coastline. It was clear to them that taking action was indeed much more effective than relying on donations. They started helping out with the only means they had, driving up north with food, supplies and appliances to give out to the refugee camps improvised on-site. Even though the town’s inhabitants seem to have regained a sense of normalcy in their everyday life, they have to cope with living amidst the remnants of what used to be their peaceful and beloved town. For Minami Sanriku used to be a charming fisherman’s village on the Eastern coastline of Japan, renowned for its warm hospitality and beautiful beaches. Now, all that is left is an empty valley, the small town having been washed away by the worst tsunami ever to hit its coast, the remaining population desperately trying to rebuild what has been taken away by nature.
Kasumiko Murakami, acclaimed Japanese writer and journalist, has been going onsite ever since, hearing out the women of Minami Sanriku and trying to give them moral support. Nishimae, with her background as a child psychiatrist, provided her assistance to the broken families and grief stricken children the tragedy left parentless. Inevitably, the fortunate turn of events which saved most of the children of Minami Sanriku, who were at school on higher grounds at the time, came as a double edged sword as most of these children are now orphans. After facing such traumatic experience and dealing with immeasurable loss, the Minami Sanriku children are still, to this day, battling with severe post-traumatic shock and night terrors. From what the two women witnessed in the aftermath of the earthquake, it seemed essential for the inhabitants of the region to try to regain their pride, something very meaningful to the eyes of this insular nation, as well as their autonomy as a community. Touched by their modesty and strength, Kasumiko committed herself, along with Ritsuko, to helping those women find a way to recover from this nightmare, giving them the means to make a living with a self-managed activity. From that came the idea of the AMA Project. Working hand in hand with the Japanese association Azuma-re, their goal is to help those women stay active and find a purpose in life while the men are busy cleaning the land and restoring their much-needed fishing industry.
This project was created with the warmhearted support of Jane Birkin, who has already been very active helping out Japan on the front by visiting the disaster stricken regions right after the March 11th events and by donating one of her famous Hermes bags to raise funds. As Murakami and Nishimae, she was frustrated by the lack of efficiency of major humanitarian organizations and found the AMA Project to be a reliable alternative. Also collaborating with the likes of famous French tag artist ANDRE and talented Japanese designers, they created delicate hand-made plaited bracelets embellished with crystals; Green for hope and red for the heart of the women who made them. The pieces come in an envelope customized by ANDRE and with a hand written note from Birkin. Launching the Ama bracelets exactly one year after the events, they chose to present three different items with the cooperation of the Colette boutique in Paris. The bracelets will be showcased at the Colette Carnaval this weekend at the WE LOVE JAPAN stand. For all you Parisiens, make sure you come by and give your support!
