French animator Bibo Bergeron is teaming with Louis Viau to launch Happy Accident, a Paris-based outfit that will develop and co-produce Bergeron's films as well as third-party titles.
The shingle is developing "Socks," a 3D animated fantasy-adventure that follows zany characters through a dream-like, parallel world of textiles. "I envision 'Socks' as a mix of 'Alice in Wonderland' and 'The Wizard of Oz,' " Bergeron told Variety. "The graphic style will be very lush and colorful."
Bergeron said that 90% of the visuals have been completed on the estimated $40 million toon.
He will direct with Francois Morel and will collaborate with animation studios in France and possibly in Belgium, Luxembourg or Canada.
Bergeron is also developing his first live-action pic, "Jeanne," from his own script, starring French singer-turned-thesp Vanessa Paradis. It is inspired by the life of Jeanne D'Alcy, who married French cinema pioneer Georges Méliès and rose to stardom as one of the country's first film actresses in the late 1800s.
French singer and thesp Matthieu Chedid will also star.
Lensing is expected to kick off early next year. " 'Jeanne' will feature edgy, retro-style vfx and will shoot entirely in a studio," said Bergeron.
Happy Accident's roster also includes helmer Uli Meyer's comedy horror toon "Monstermania."
Bergeron's last toon, 2011's EuropaCorp-produced "A Monster in Paris," a 3D toon featuring an original score from Paradis and Chedid, was a B.O. sleeper hit in France where it grossed $13.5 million and performed well in Russia and Belgium. EuropaCorp is in advanced negotiation on a U.S. deal.
